Why are a variety of languages and cultures disappearing nowadays?

Now the chance of experiencing different lifestyles or imitating to speak a few words of other languages for fun is slim due to the disappearance of some cultures and languages. I think that superstitious cultures and languages behind modern times cannot survive(thesis statement).

Once I visited Se ethnic minorities village, located on a hillside in south of China. To my disappointment, I did not feel a different thing about ethnic clothes, food or music. Ridiculously, an old villager said that the forefather of his race had been an embodiment of a fairy with a dog head and a human body! The old generations have been proud of being the descendants of the fairy; however, Generation Y may feel ashamed of that because they know exactly this is a superstitious myth and to be a dog"s descendants is not a glorious thing.Apparently,the cultures basing on superstitious belief would be torn down by social progress(topic sentence).

Further more, a language without written methods may be replaced by advanced one(topic sentence). There are many parts of the world where people cannot write because they do not have their own written language. The only way they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas handed down from one generation of storytellers to another. With the fast pace of globalization, international aid can be put forward to reach every corner of the world. Those underdeveloped or isolated areas could receive food, medicine and education. The advanced civilization has pervaded into those primitive cultures hence they have started to learn writing something by the means of the available language accompanied with aid. Therefore their original one would have disappeared.

In conclusion, the disappearance of some cultures or languages is not worth preventing. This is an unavoidable outcome of the global economic growth. Most importantly, people can enjoy more prosperity and social progress.

The disappearance of a variety of language and culture, obviously not keeping pace with the development of human’s society, has been noticed nowadays because the diversity of human civilization has been threatened from inside aspect. I am convinced that the reasons why language and culture have been fading away are as follows.

Some authoritative researches show that the globalization is the reason which stands in the breach to be responsible to the language and culture losing. The globalization process involved various economic, political and even culture modes into the same system which has universal characteristic. As a result, some cultures, especially the ones of developing counties, have lost their own special signs. For example, in China, young people only know Saint Valentine’s Day but ignore the traditional Chinese Lover’s Day on the lunar date of 7th July.

Another remarkable reason comes that the culture erosion from the power states, which plan to snatch economic profit and political benefit, has made the weak culture wither out of the world by either the violent or the peaceful means. Although this reason sounds so selfish and cruel, it happens all the time from the age of Roma to the war on Iraq.

With the reference to an individual culture, inside, there are a lot of reasons whatever the laziness in the development or the ignorance in the independence, causing their own getting-behind. For instance, in some developing counties, the traditional art has lost its market which had already been took charge by modern commodity.

All these reasons draw a picture of the misfortune of losing so many precious and valuable culture and languages, therefore, we should join the effects to prevent the dying-away to leave our offspring a colorful world.

Let’s first see how we normally define “learning a language really well”. By my understanding, learning a language well would mean being able to speak the language in a proper way. Here, with speaking it properly, we need to know that due to cultural differences, many things are just so different from culture to culture. For example, the Chinese often greet each other by asking ‘Have you taken your meal?’ which, to the Western ears, would make an invitation to lunch or dinner. Therefore, the lack of a knowledge of the cultures of different countries will give rise to wrong interpretations of the message issued or received and as a result, lead to misunderstandings. In this way, we can not say that we are speaking the language properly and further, we can not say that we speak it well.

Second, the ultimate purpose for us to learn a language is to use it in our communication with other people who speak it, mainly the native speakers. Suppose we know nothing about the US or Britain, including its government, its people, its tradition, and its other aspects. Do you think you can speak English properly, thus achieving effective communication with the American or British people? I’ll say at least I can’t.

第三，我们还需要知道我们所学语言国家的人民的生活方式才能妥当地讲他们的语言。举个例子吧：中国人吃猪肉，但穆斯林不吃。还有，穆斯林宗教气氛浓郁，每天多次举行仪式。如果我们不知道这些事情的话又怎能指望与他们交流而不招致麻烦呢?按照这一逻辑，如果我们不能保证妥当地讲好他们的语言，我们又怎么说他们的语言我们学得很好呢?

It is almost impossible to talk of the human civilization without mentioning the unique roles played by various languages and cultures. However, partly because of the tendency of globalization, partly because of insufficient protection, languages and cultures are losing their diversity in many countries.

Among countless factors which result in this changing, there is a most significant one: the globalization. As we know, compared to the past, nowadays, different languages and cultures have more chances to influence and assimilate each other along with the globalization. Consequently, prevailing languages and popular culture gradually replace some minor dialects and traditional culture. For example, in China, it seems that McDonald’s and KFC are more attractive than many Chinese snacks for teenagers. Thus, when people study foreign languages and adopt popular culture, it will weaken other languages and cultures at the same time.

The second aspect relates to lack of protection on the languages and cultures which are on the verge of extinction. It is no doubt that governments are responsible to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, whenever the claim is raised, the governments of most nations argue that their limited budget should be invested on other more benefic fields, such as finance or industry. Obviously, almost people did not realize that it will be a disaster for us to see the world’s diverse languages and cultures disappear one by one.

In conclusion, there are still several reasons, which lead to losing a variety of languages and cultures, but the vital ones have been represented as above. Facing the severed situation, it is high time that feasible measures should be implemented.
